What to do right now
- Open File Explorer, go to C:\Windows.old\Users and open the folder with your old account name.
- Copy, do not move, the files from Desktop, Documents, Pictures and Downloads into your current profile.
- Do not run Disk Cleanup or delete Windows.old until you have copied everything and checked it opens.
- If Windows.old is gone, use C: as little as possible and scan it from a USB stick, saving results to another disk.
Step by step
Check that Windows.old exists
Open File Explorer, click This PC and open drive C:. A folder named Windows.old next to Windows, Program Files and Users means the previous installation was kept. Its size, shown in Properties, is often several gigabytes, which is a good sign that user files are inside.
Open your old profile
Go to Windows.old, then Users, then the folder with your former account name. If Windows says you do not currently have permission, choose Continue to grant administrator access. You only need read access to copy files, so there is no reason to change ownership of the whole folder.
Show hidden items if needed
Program data lives in the hidden AppData folder. In File Explorer choose View, then Show, then Hidden items in Windows 11, or tick Hidden items on the View tab in Windows 10. AppData usually holds things such as Outlook data files, Sticky Notes and browser profiles, although locations vary by program and version.
Copy files to your current profile
Select the folders you need, such as Desktop, Documents and Pictures, and copy them into a new folder in your current Documents or onto an external drive. Copying instead of moving keeps the original intact if something goes wrong and lets Windows still roll back if you need it.
Check the copies before cleanup
Open a few files of each type: documents, photos, spreadsheets. Only when everything opens should you let Windows remove Windows.old or run Disk Cleanup. If you plan to use Go back in the recovery settings, do that first, since it depends on Windows.old.
Scan if Windows.old was removed
If the folder is missing, stop installing and downloading on C:. Run the FileFix Ultimate portable ZIP from USB, open Deleted file recovery, scan drive C: with the Balanced scan and save the results to a different physical disk.
What Windows.old keeps, and for how long
Windows creates Windows.old when it installs a new version over an existing one: a feature upgrade, an upgrade from Windows 10 to 11, or a fresh install onto drive C: without formatting it. It contains the old Windows folder, Program Files and Users. Installed programs cannot be run from there, but personal files can be copied out normally.
Windows usually removes the folder automatically after about 10 days, when the period for going back to the previous version ends. It can also disappear earlier through Disk Cleanup, where it appears as Previous Windows installations, or through Storage Sense and the temporary files list in Settings. Deleting it this way bypasses the Recycle Bin.
Finding files outside the obvious folders
Not everything sits in Desktop or Documents. Some programs save to their own folders inside the old profile, others to AppData, and some to a folder at the root of C:, which is moved into Windows.old as well. Use the File Explorer search box while Windows.old is open and search for a file name or an extension such as .pst, .xlsx or .psd to find scattered items.
If OneDrive folder backup was on before the upgrade, the old profile's Desktop and Documents may be nearly empty because the real files lived in the OneDrive folder. Check the OneDrive folder in Windows.old and sign in to OneDrive on the new installation; the files are usually still in the cloud.
When Windows.old was already deleted
Removing Windows.old deletes many thousands of files at once, but on a hard drive their content often stays on the disk until new data takes the space. Because the new Windows keeps writing to C:, the sooner you scan the better. Files found through NTFS records may come back with their original path under Windows.old, which makes them easy to identify.
On an internal SSD the outlook is weaker, because TRIM usually tells the drive to erase the freed blocks soon after the deletion. In that case look for other copies first: a backup drive, OneDrive, email attachments, or a phone that synced the same photos.
When it won't work
- A clean install that formatted drive C:, or Reset this PC with Remove everything, does not create Windows.old with your files.
- Once Windows.old is deleted from an internal SSD with TRIM, the content is usually erased.
- Programs inside Windows.old cannot be started or restored; only their data files can be copied.
- Files that were cloud-only in OneDrive were never stored inside Windows.old.
How FileFix Ultimate helps
- Find unsaved files includes Previous Windows (Windows.old) as a source, listing user folders left behind after an upgrade.
- If Windows.old was removed, Deleted file recovery reads NTFS records first, so files can return with their names and their Windows.old path.
- The portable ZIP runs from USB, so nothing new is installed on C: while you recover.
- Free for personal use with no recovery limit and no upload; scans read-only and saves only to a different disk.
FileFix Ultimate is free for personal use, works offline and never writes to the drive you are recovering from. Business use needs a one-year licence per PC. Check the signature before you run it.
Frequently asked questions
How long does Windows.old stay on my PC?
Usually around 10 days after the upgrade, the same period during which you can go back to the previous version. Disk Cleanup, Storage Sense or a manual delete can remove it sooner.
Windows says I don't have permission to open Windows.old. What should I do?
Choose Continue when asked; that grants access with your administrator account. If you use a standard account, sign in with an administrator account or ask the PC's owner to copy the files.
Can I restore my whole old user profile from Windows.old?
Not as a working profile. Copy your personal files and, if needed, specific program data such as an Outlook data file. Programs and settings have to be reinstalled or set up again on the new Windows.
There is no Windows.old folder at all. Was it never created?
Possibly. It is only created when Windows is installed over an existing installation without formatting. If you formatted the drive or chose Remove everything, it was not made, and a scan of C: is the remaining option.
