How to find unsaved files from any program on Windows

When a program crashes or you close it without saving, the work is not always gone. Office, Hancom Office, Windows 11 Notepad, Notepad++, VS Code, Photoshop and other programs write autosave, backup or temporary copies while you work, and those copies often stay on the PC for a while. The quickest way to check is to search all of these places at once and copy anything useful to a safe folder before the programs clean them up.

What to do right now

  1. Reopen the program first; many show a recovery panel or restore unsaved tabs on their own.
  2. If nothing appears, search every autosave, backup and temporary folder at once instead of guessing which one the program used.
  3. Copy what you find to another folder right away, because programs delete these copies on their own schedule.
  4. If the program never wrote a copy, there is nothing to find, and only a deleted file scan or a backup can help.

Step by step

  1. Reopen the program once

Start the program that lost your work and wait a moment. Word, Excel and PowerPoint show a Document Recovery pane, Windows 11 Notepad and Notepad++ reopen unsaved tabs, and VS Code restores Untitled editors. If your file appears, save it under a new name immediately.

  2. Avoid cleanup tools for now

Do not run Disk Cleanup, Storage Sense, CCleaner or similar tools, and do not reinstall or reset the program. These actions are exactly what removes temporary and autosave copies.

  3. Open the unsaved file finder

In FileFix Ultimate, open Find files lost when a program crashed or closed without saving from the home screen and click Find unsaved files. The search reads your user folders only and changes nothing.

  4. Filter by program and kind

Results are grouped by program. Use the Program and Kind filters, such as Never saved, Autosave, Backup or Temporary file, and sort by Modified to see what was written around the time you lost the work.

  5. Preview before you copy

Click Preview on text, image and document items to check the content. The suggested name already strips prefixes and temporary extensions, so a ~WRL0001.tmp that is really a Word file is offered as a .docx.

  6. Copy selected items to a safe folder

Tick the items and click Copy selected. Choose a folder that was not searched, ideally on another drive. The originals stay where they are, and Office copies that do not open can be repaired in the same step.

Why one search beats checking each program

Every program hides its recovery copies somewhere different. Office uses UnsavedFiles and AutoRecover folders and files such as .asd, .wbk, .xar and ~WRL*.tmp, Hancom Office writes .asv and .bak files, Notepad keeps tab state files, Notepad++ and VS Code have their own backup folders, and Adobe programs use AutoRecover or DataRecovery folders. Many of these are inside the hidden AppData folder, and the exact path can change between versions.

Searching them one by one takes time, and time matters because these copies are short lived. A combined search also catches cases you might not think of, such as a document that one program saved as a temporary file under a meaningless name, or a file you opened recently that has since disappeared.

What a recovery copy is, and when none exists

A recovery copy exists only if the program wrote one to disk before it closed. Autosave usually runs every few minutes, so a document you typed for thirty seconds before a crash may never have reached the disk. Some programs, such as classic Notepad or many simple editors, keep unsaved text only in memory. In those cases there is honestly nothing for any tool to find.

Choosing Don't save also matters. Most programs delete their autosave copy when you deliberately discard changes. The deleted copy may still be found by a deleted file scan of drive C:, but on an SSD with TRIM it is usually erased within moments.

Common mistakes that destroy the last copy

Opening a temporary file in place and letting the program save over it, running a cleanup tool to free space, restarting several times while hoping the file reappears, and reinstalling the program to fix the crash are the most common ways the last copy gets lost. Copy first, then experiment with the copy.

When it won't work

  • The program never wrote an autosave, backup or temporary copy, for example because autosave was off or the work was only seconds old.
  • You chose Don't save and the program deleted its copy, and that deleted space has since been reused or trimmed by an SSD.
  • A cleanup tool, Storage Sense, a program reset or a reinstall already removed the copies.
  • The work was saved only to a network or cloud location that the program did not mirror locally.

How FileFix Ultimate helps

  • Searches Office, Hancom Office, Windows 11 Notepad, Notepad++, VS Code, Adobe, AutoCAD, browser download and temporary folders in one pass.
  • Reads files only; it never moves, deletes or edits the copies it finds.
  • Detects the real file type from the content, so temporary files get a usable extension and a suggested name.
  • Copies selected items to a folder you choose and can repair Office copies that will not open.
  • Lists Recent items whose file is gone and starts a deleted file scan for them, fully offline and free for personal use.

FileFix Ultimate is free for personal use, works offline and never writes to the drive you are recovering from. Business use needs a one-year licence per PC. Check the signature before you run it.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one place where Windows keeps all unsaved files?

No. Windows itself does not keep unsaved work. Each program decides whether and where to write a recovery copy, which is why a search across all the known locations is faster than looking program by program.

How long do autosave copies stay on the PC?

It depends on the program. Some delete the copy as soon as you save or close normally, others keep it for days. Treat every copy as temporary and copy it out as soon as you find it.

The finder shows nothing. What does that mean?

No recovery copy is left in your user folders. If the file was saved once and then deleted, try Deleted file recovery on that drive. If it was never saved and the program kept it only in memory, it cannot be recovered.

Can the finder search another Windows account or an old Windows installation?

It searches the user folders it can read and also looks at user folders left in Windows.old after an upgrade. Folders you have no permission to read are listed as locations that could not be read.
