How to find desktop files that disappeared

You turned on the PC and the desktop is empty? It is tempting to reach for recovery software straight away, but when desktop files vanish all at once they are usually not deleted. Desktop icons may be switched off, OneDrive may have moved the Desktop folder, or Windows may have signed you into a different profile. Checking takes five minutes.

What to do right now

  1. Right-click the desktop and check that Show desktop icons is ticked under View.
  2. Look in the Desktop folder inside OneDrive and search in File Explorer.
  3. If they are still missing, check the Recycle Bin, then scan drive C: with a recovery tool.

What to check, in order

  1. Check that icons are shown

Right-click an empty part of the desktop and tick Show desktop icons under View. This alone fixes it more often than you would think.

  2. The OneDrive Desktop folder

When OneDrive backup is turned on, the Desktop folder moves inside OneDrive. Open the Desktop folder under OneDrive in File Explorer, and check the OneDrive bin on the web too.

  3. Check for another profile

Open C:\Users and look for a TEMP folder or another name besides yours. With a temporary profile the desktop looks empty, but the Desktop folder in your real profile still holds the files.

  4. Search and check the bin

In File Explorer, search all of drive C: for part of a file name, and check the Recycle Bin.

  5. If they were really deleted, scan

If they are nowhere, keep use of drive C: to a minimum and run the FileFix Ultimate portable ZIP from a USB stick to scan C:. Switch the results to folder view, find the Desktop folder under Users and save to another disk.

Three common causes

The first is OneDrive folder backup. When it is turned on during setup or an update, Desktop, Documents and Pictures move inside OneDrive. If OneDrive is later turned off or unlinked, the files remain only in the OneDrive folder and the desktop looks empty.

The second is a temporary profile. If Windows cannot load your user profile after an update or error, it signs you in with an empty temporary one. The third is simply hidden icons or a different account. In all three cases, nothing was deleted.

If they really were deleted

If someone deleted them or a clean-up tool removed them, desktop files live on drive C: and are recovered like any other deleted file. If the laptop's drive C: is an SSD, TRIM means the sooner you act, the better.

When recovery is difficult

  • Time has passed since deletion on an SSD with TRIM.
  • Online-only OneDrive files were deleted and the OneDrive bin period has passed.
  • Windows was reset without keeping personal files.

How FileFix Ultimate helps

  • Restores the Desktop folder under Users and the original file names from NTFS records on C:.
  • A portable version running from USB keeps writes to C: to a minimum.
  • The unsaved file finder also lists previous user folders in Windows.old.
  • Warns about SSD and TRIM risks up front.

FileFix Ultimate is free, works offline and never writes to the drive you are recovering from. Check the signature before you run it.
