Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about how FileFix Ultimate works and what it can and cannot do.

Is FileFix Ultimate really free?

Yes. There is no trial, no paid tier and no limit on how much data you can recover. The source code is published under the Apache-2.0 license.

Does it upload my files anywhere?

No. The app works fully offline. It does not upload files, does not send telemetry and does not need an account.

Can it recover files from an SSD?

Sometimes, but often not. Most SSDs use TRIM, which clears deleted blocks shortly after deletion. If TRIM has already run, the data is physically gone and no software can bring it back.

Can it recover files from a BitLocker-encrypted drive?

Only if the drive is unlocked with its password or recovery key first. Without the key, the encrypted data cannot be read.

Why does Windows show a SmartScreen warning?

SmartScreen warns about apps that are new and have not yet built download reputation. Click "More info", check that the publisher is PROJECTTEAMFORYOU, then click "Run anyway". The warning goes away as reputation grows.

How do I check that my download is genuine?

Each release lists SHA-256 hashes. Run Get-FileHash in PowerShell and compare the result. Also check that the digital signature shows PROJECTTEAMFORYOU.

Why must I save recovered files to a different disk?

Saving to the same disk can overwrite the very data you are trying to recover. The app blocks the same volume and asks for explicit confirmation for another partition on the same disk.

Will repairing a file change the original?

No. The repaired version is always written as a new file. The original stays exactly as it was.

What does "Extracted · not validated" mean?

The data was copied out, but the app could not independently confirm that the file opens. Open it yourself to check. It is reported separately so the results are not overstated.

My drive is clicking. Should I scan it?

No. Clicking, grinding or a drive that keeps disconnecting points to physical damage. Every scan can make it worse. Turn it off and contact a professional data recovery service.
