How to recover unsaved or closed Notepad text on Windows 11

The new Notepad in Windows 11 remembers open tabs, including text you never saved, so it is easy to rely on it until a tab disappears. Whether the text can come back depends on how it was lost: an update or crash usually leaves it in place, while closing a tab and choosing Don't save removes it.

What to do right now

  1. Open Notepad again first; with Continue previous session on, unsaved tabs come back.
  2. If not, copy the TabState folder before Notepad overwrites it, and look inside for your text.
  3. Text from a tab closed with Don't save is deleted and can only be found by a deleted file scan.

Step by step

  1. Reopen Notepad and check the setting

Start Notepad. Open Settings with the gear icon and check When Notepad starts. Continue previous session restores unsaved tabs; Start new session hides them. If it was set to Start new session, switch it back and restart Notepad.

  2. Back up the TabState folder

Close Notepad. Paste %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\Microsoft.WindowsNotepad_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\TabState into the File Explorer address bar and copy the whole folder somewhere else, so later Notepad sessions cannot overwrite it.

  3. Look inside the .bin files

Each tab is stored as a .bin file. The format is not plain text, but your words are usually readable. Open a copy in a hex viewer or an editor that can show binary files, and copy out the readable parts.

  4. Check Notepad++ and VS Code backups

Notepad++ keeps unsaved tabs in %APPDATA%\Notepad++\backup when session snapshot is on. VS Code keeps them in %APPDATA%\Code\Backups, and its Local History in the Timeline view holds earlier versions of saved files.

  5. Run the unsaved file finder

FileFix Ultimate's unsaved and auto-recovery file finder looks in the Notepad, Notepad++ and VS Code locations and copies what it finds to a folder you choose.

  6. Scan for deleted tab files

If the tab was closed with Don't save, its file was deleted. Run a deleted file scan on drive C: soon and filter for small .bin or text files around the time of the loss. Save results to another drive.

How Windows 11 Notepad keeps unsaved text

Since 2023, Notepad saves the state of every open tab automatically, whether or not the tab has a file name. That is why unsaved notes survive a restart or a Windows update. The data lives in the TabState folder inside the Notepad app package in your user profile.

When you close a tab and choose Don't save, Notepad deletes that tab's state file. When you choose Start new session in settings, older tabs are no longer shown. A Notepad reset or reinstall in Settings › Apps can clear the whole folder, so do not do that while you still need the text.

Classic Notepad and Windows 10

The classic Notepad in Windows 10 has no autosave at all. Text that was never saved existed only in memory, and after a crash or a closed window there is nothing on disk to recover. In that case look for copies elsewhere: the clipboard history with Windows key + V, if it was turned on, or the program the text came from.

Avoid losing notes again

Save important notes as real files in a folder with backups or version history. Keep Continue previous session on, and do not treat a long list of unsaved tabs as storage: a single wrong click on Don't save removes a tab for good.

When it won't work

  • The text was typed into classic Notepad without saving and the window was closed.
  • The tab was closed with Don't save and its deleted file has already been overwritten.
  • Notepad was reset or reinstalled, which clears the TabState folder.

How FileFix Ultimate helps

  • Finds Windows 11 Notepad unsaved tabs and Notepad++ and VS Code backups without changing them.
  • Copies the files it finds to a folder you choose so later sessions cannot overwrite them.
  • Searches deleted files on NTFS when a tab file was removed, and saves results to another drive.
  • Works fully offline; no text is uploaded.

FileFix Ultimate is free, works offline and never writes to the drive you are recovering from. Check the signature before you run it.

Frequently asked questions

Where does Windows 11 Notepad store unsaved tabs?

In %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\Microsoft.WindowsNotepad_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\TabState, as one .bin file per tab.

I closed a Notepad tab and clicked Don't save. Can I get it back?

Only if the deleted tab file can still be found. Run a deleted file scan as soon as possible. On an SSD the chance is low because of TRIM.

Can I recover text from classic Notepad after a crash?

Usually not. Classic Notepad keeps unsaved text only in memory. Check the clipboard history or the source the text came from.

Can I open the .bin files in Notepad?

Opening them directly often shows a mix of text and symbols. Work on a copy, open it in an editor that handles binary files and copy out the readable parts.
